Raising Voices Netflix Review: A Thought-Provoking Spanish Drama That Resonates

As with Netflix's Raising Voices in my recommendations, I do not know what to anticipate. It seemed like the drama would be another one of those teen-centric programs in Spanish. However, very soon it proved to be much more—a thought-provoking exploration of trauma, adolescence, and resilience. With nuanced storytelling and the compelling cast, Raising Voices is worth attention if it sometimes stumbles.

A Unique Take on Teen Struggles:

At its core, Raising Voices tells the story of Alma, a 17-year-old girl going through the tumultuous years of adolescence. Her life takes a dramatic turn, bringing out revelations and growth, not only for herself but also for those surrounding her. This is a show that sets itself apart because it is not focused on Alma, but on a diverse group of protagonists with their own specific problems to face.

• Alma: A tale of transformation, Alma's own is a story of self-realization and strength.
• Berta: She is suffering mentally and signifies the silent battles which many teens face.
• Greta: A young lesbian in a fragile relationship with an older woman.
• Nata: A girl trapped in a toxic relationship with an abusive boyfriend.

What makes Raising Voices powerful is its ability to shed light on the many forms of harassment and trauma young girls face. It dares to ask questions, such as, "What constitutes assault?" and challenges societal norms that usually point a finger at the victims.

Subtle Yet Powerful Execution:

Unlike the other teen dramas, Raising Voices is a lot less explicit. Shows like 13 Reasons Why and Grand Army have been often panned for their explicitness when depicting assault, thus bringing forth issues in a manner that was almost shock value. On the other hand, Raising Voices leaves much to the viewer's imagination, respecting their emotions while delivering a powerful message.

That being said, the series does contain some graphic images, but they are in context and not gratuitous. This way, the storyline remains thought-provoking without becoming exploitative.

Stellar Performances and Representation:

The series boasts an exceptional cast of rising stars who bring authenticity to their roles:

• Nicole Wallace (known for My Fault) portrays Alma with raw vulnerability.
• Clara Galle (of Through My Window fame) captures Greta’s struggles with depth.
• Teresa De Mera and Aicha Villaverde shine as Berta and Nata, respectively, adding layers to their complex characters.

Together, the cast ensures that each storyline resonates, offering diverse perspectives on what it means to grow up in a world rife with challenges.

Strengths and Shortcomings:

While Raising Voices excels in the portrayal of difficult topics, nothing is perfect. The show has a slow first half with some scenes and subplots that seem to do nothing. However, this story picks up considerably past the fourth episode, allowing viewers to be drawn into the emotional core of the narrative.

Another interesting feature is how music is used in the series. The most popular hip-hop and pop tracks play when key moments occur to increase the drama. Though it does well in many places, it feels sometimes overwhelming, taking away the show's emotional value at times.

A Message of Friendship and Resilience:

What makes Raising Voices stand out is the importance it places on support and friendship, especially for young women. The series focuses on solidarity in adversity, bringing a refreshing change to a genre that is often dominated by individualistic narratives. With multiple viewpoints, the show promotes understanding rather than judgment, making it a must-watch for viewers who seek depth and authenticity.

Final Thoughts:

Raising Voices is not perfect, but it is undeniably impactful. It avoids many of the pitfalls of its genre and delivers a respectful and nuanced portrayal of sensitive topics. The series succeeds in addressing universal struggles while remaining culturally unique, making it a compelling watch for both teens and adults.

If you have enjoyed shows like Grand Army or are looking for a culturally distinct drama with similar context, then Raising Voices is worth your time. Just be prepared for a slow start and check trigger warnings before diving in.

This show, despite its many flaws, has a great finale and some really good messaging, making it an addition to Netflix's catalog worth it. I would give Raising Voices a solid 3 out of 5 stars.

Why You Should Watch:

• Explores sensitive topics with nuance and respect.
• Features a diverse and talented cast.
• Emphasizes the importance of friendship and solidarity.

Ultimately, Raising Voices serves as a reminder that even in the darkest times, there’s hope, resilience, and strength in unity. Whether you’re a fan of teen dramas or seeking a show with substance, this Spanish series delivers a story that stays with you long after the credits roll.
