Money Back Guarantee is a film in a world that is otherwise saturated with formulaic films. It is an eccentric, laugh-out-loud experiment, and the first time Faisal Qureshi has written, produced, and directed a film. It is a whirlwind of political satire, punchlines, and unexpected character quirks, but the narrative is riddled with peculiarities that leave the audience both entertained and puzzled.
The Star-Studded Ensemble:
MBG boasts a pretty impressive cast of seasoned actors, up-and-comers, and surprise debuts. Fawad Khan, one of Pakistan's most beloved stars, makes a comedic leap as the nefarious bank manager, whose over-the-top performance will leave you momentarily forgetting his stature as a heartthrob and the brooding Maula Jatt. Maani, Gohar Rasheed, and Shafaat Ali can go toe to toe in comedic antics that bring the best punchlines in the movie.
The characters, as always, are full of their own personality, be it Kiran Malik's poet spewing out verses on gas or Rambo's Christian Bale, a Christian whose name happens to be a pun. Even cricket legend Waseem Akram and his wife Shaniera Akram make notable acting debuts, adding to the film's eclectic charm.
Comedy that Hits and Misses:
Qureshi is a unique humor brand running throughout the film. In the script, he attacks stereotypes and societal issues of Pakistan in sharp political satire that strikes chords with audience familiar with the cultural geography of Pakistan. However, the humor is a mixed bag sometimes witty and layered, and at other times, silly or incomprehensible.
The film has an overdependence on visual and situational comedy, often pushing it into absurdity. For instance, Faisal Qureshi himself features in multiple minor roles - popping up as a fishmonger, exterminator, etc., etc., delivering some lines which feel out of context of the plot at times. Though amusing, it contributes to a scattershot narrative.
A Story that Loses Focus:
The biggest weakness of MBG is in its storytelling. The plot goes astray with scenes that seem disconnected or unnecessary. Characters meet lookalikes without explanation, and some subplots are left unresolved. For example, Javed Sheikh appears in several scenes but mysteriously vanishes without closure. Similarly, a bizarre sequence involving mice adds little to the narrative, leaving viewers scratching their heads.
The ambition to make every scene funny and meaningful ultimately dilutes the coherence of the movie. MBG could have been a cinematic gem if it had been edited tighter, with extraneous scenes eliminated and a clearer focus on the main storyline.
Fawad Khan: A Comedic Revelation

Fawad Khan was great in the movie. Known for playing intense roles and having that magnetic screen presence, he plunges headfirst into comedy with great gusto. His role as the Machiavellian bank manager was over-the-top yet lovable, demonstrating his versatility as an actor. It is a treat to see him take up a character so far removed from his usual fare, thus proving that he is never afraid to take risks.
Political Satire through Music:
The strength of MBG lies in its music, which goes well with the satirical tone of the film. The songs, with political commentary infused into them, are both catchy and thought-provoking. Ayesha Omar's cameo in a song as Meena Begum is another visual treat, adding glamour and charm to the narrative.
What Works and What Doesn’t:
While MBG shines brightly, it falters with execution. The cast performs great and the humor mostly works especially for viewers familiar with the Pakistani culture. Still, erratic pacing and plot overwhelm create too much distraction in terms of its overall impact.
In an era when people have been spoiled with fine productions like The Legend of Maula Jatt, MBG feels to be a missed opportunity. While its potential is not disputed, its experimental nature is not going to ring for everyone.
Should You Watch It?
Money Back Guarantee is not like any other movie. It is bold, weird, and full of satire. If you like the cast, enjoy political comedy, or just need something easy to watch, you'll be entertained by this film, but it's not for those who need a very smooth narrative or deeply nuanced storytelling.
In conclusion, Faisal Qureshi’s debut is a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows. It’s a testament to his unique vision and comedic prowess, albeit one that could have benefited from a more refined approach. MBG entertains, confuses, and amuses in equal measure—leaving viewers with plenty to talk about after the credits roll.
