Set against the backdrop of Banaras, Bicchoo Ka Khel is an interesting mix of crime, drama, and intrigue that explores the journey of young writer Akhil Shrivastav as he looks to avenge his father's death. The story is an adaptation of Amit Khan's novel. As a Zee5 original series, it has the potential to weave a web of lies, betrayal, and revenge, thus being a gripping watch-at least most of the time.
A Thrilling Premise Rooted in Emotion:
The story revolves around Akhil played by Divyenndu Sharma and his father Babu (Mukul Chadda) who live double lives. In the daytime, they manage Chaubey Mishthan Bhandar. At night, they act as petty thieves. Things take a disastrous turn in their lives when Babu gets framed for murder of local goon Munna Singh and later meets a mysterious death in jail. Believing that his father has been framed, he embarks on a quest to find truth and justice amidst layers of corruption and deception.
The series starts with a bang. Akhil is shown to shoot noted social worker Anil Chaubey in front of a live audience during the university festival. From then on, his story unfolds piece by piece through a series of interrogations from each character.
Strong Performances and Memorable Dialogues:
Divyenndu Sharma, best known for his role as Munna Bhaiya in Mirzapur, fares well in the role of Akhil. His dry wit, impeccable comic timing, and raw emotions make him the show's backbone. The dialogues, full of Banarasi flavor and humor, are a treat; this writer recalls, "Boyfriend hain soap detergent nahi, ki pehle istemaal kare fir vishwas kare.".
Anshul Chauhan is playing the role of Rashmi Chaubey, Akhil's love interest, with such grace and authenticity. Her chemistry with Divyenndu adds depth to the narrative and is one of the highlights of the show. Supporting cast members like Rajesh Sharma, Trishna Mukherjee, and Mukul Chadda bring credibility and nuance to their roles, enhancing the overall appeal.
Direction, Screenplay, and Cinematography:

Director Ashish R. Shukla keeps the viewers riveted with a quick, twisting, and turning plot. The cinematography by Sunil Pillai beautifully captures the feel of Banaras, including all its vibrant streets and rustic charms, and draws the viewers in.
The screenplay by Ghalib Asad Bhopali and Gibran Noorani remains at a high tempo throughout, where there is never a dull moment. Every time you feel you can predict the plot, there is something that pulls you deeper into the story. Yet, the fast pace leaves viewers sometimes unable to connect dots, and they find themselves dealing with the storyline.
Strengths: Nostalgia and Entertainment
One of the most remarkable aspects of Bicchoo Ka Khel is its nostalgic nod to the golden era of Indian cinema from the 1980s. Evergreen songs like Aao Na Gale Laga Lo Na and Dhanno Ki Aankhon Mein are added to charm and a sense of familiarity.
The background music in the show is worth special mention as it heightens the tension and takes the story forward. The crime drama fans would love to see the bold dialogues, intense confrontations, and action-packed sequences in the show.
Weaknesses: A Promising Start, an Average Finish
Despite its promising premise, Bicchoo Ka Khel falters in its climax. All the gripping buildup of earlier episodes seems to lose their punch in the final reveal in a revenge thriller. In fact, the ending seems slightly predictable and does not match the earlier episodes in terms of intensity.
Moreover, the hurried pace of the plot may make some viewers feel that they are disconnected from some characters and subplots. The show does indeed deliver on its promise of twists and turns, but sometimes at the cost of clarity.
Final Verdict:
Bicchoo Ka Khel is a mixed bag. It has all the ingredients of a classic revenge drama: a vengeful protagonist, corrupt antagonists, and plenty of suspense. Stellar performance by Divyenndu Sharma and nostalgia mixed with gripping twists have made it an entertaining watch, though uneven pacing and a weak climax prevent it from touching the heights that its elements deserve.
If you’re a fan of crime thrillers or Divyenndu’s work, Bicchoo Ka Khel is worth a watch, but temper your expectations for the finale. This series may not leave an indelible mark, but it does offer a few hours of engaging drama with memorable moments.
